TCG Junior Watch: Eythora Thorsdottir
Gymnast: Eythora Thorsdottir
Country: The Netherlands
Recommended by: Kristen Bruno
Who is she?
Eythora Thorsdottir is a junior Dutch gymnast born August 10, 1998 from Icelandic parents. She is a beautiful gymnast who turns senior in 2014.
Where does she train and with whom?
She currently trains at BATO-PAX Gymnastics just outside of Amsterdam. Her coaches are Patrick Kiens and Kate Sarisska.
Does she have much competitive experience?
She has experience with smaller competitions, but most notable are her results at the 2012 European Junior Championships where she was selected to be part of the Dutch team. Eythora performed on all 4 events helping her team to a 6th place finish. She finished 10th all around and qualified to the beam final where she finished 8th.
What makes her an exciting prospect?
Eythora is wonderful to watch, with beautiful lines and unique combinations. Her best event is beam where she can hopefully continue to upgrade and be a contender for less- represented gymnastic countries.
When do you think we will get to see her in competition next?
Nothing is decided yet, but she’d like to gain as much experience as she can at national and international competitions. Her goal for the coming year is to be one of the two Dutch gymnasts chosen to compete at the European Youth Olympic Festival being held in The Netherlands next summer.
What are you hoping she will develop in the coming years?
Eythora is beautiful to watch, and her main problem now is- like many junior gymnasts- the need for upgrades. She is still young and has plenty of time before becoming a senior, so I’m sure we’ll see her advance this next year.
What routine of hers should we watch?
Both routines here are from the all-around finals in Brussels where she finished 10th. The first is her beam routine and the second is her floor, both reflecting her personality and artistry.

What else do we need to know about her?
Eythora’s parents are both Icelandic so she maintains both Dutch and Icelandic nationality. Her favorite gymnast is Aliya Mustafina, and in her spare time she likes singing and dancing.

Wow, never heard of this girl, but I love her. She seems so much more mature than many others juniors in her performance.

She is gorgeous! Beautiful lines and expression. Reminds me of Georgia Simpson of Australia.

First, let me say, I think this series was a brilliant idea. Setting up a standardized template and allowing anyone to write a quick piece about a junior that has caught their eye, has made it easy for fans to introduce everyone to so many gymnasts. I have really been enjoying this series. There are so many talented juniors that I was wasn’t aware of. My knowledge of gymnasts still tends to be somewhat confined to the top 8ish countries. However, this series has exposed to juniors from around the world, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of them, even if it just a smaller competition.
On a side note, is it just me, or do so many of the juniors in this series, seem to be more artistic and have more creative combos than many of current top seniors? I’m not sure if this is a sign that the sport is beginning to focus more on artistry, and as a result we are seeing more of an emphasis on lines, dance, and creativity in the juniors or if as fans, we still prefer those ascetics, so we are naturally drawn to those juniors.

My cynical guess is that a lot of these juniors (especially those from less represented countries) won't go on to enjoy major successes as seniors, as beautiful as they are, because they won't have the difficulty. Or if they are successful and are able to increase their difficulty, they might lose the lovely presentation.

I agree that many of the juniors in the junior watch series are really quite artistic and unique. However, I think it's more due to the preference of the fans who write the profiles than a change in the system... I guess most of those juniors won't turn out to become World champions simply because they belong to the group of gymnasts who have great lines, lovely expression but never quite the difficulty and the amount of code-whoring to match the others. Also I think a lot of 'power gymnasts' are a bit underwhelming as (young) juniors - they haven't yet got the incredible difficulty which might set them apart as seniors but they haven't got the dance and lines which we love either...
I'd love to believe that the juniors are more artistic because the new codes which actually emphasize it but I think that would be a bit too optimistic ;-)

As expected, from Thor’s daughter :p Although perhaps being the daughter of a Norse God is cheating a bit hehe.

AHW! I LOVE this gymnast so, so, so much!!! Her floor is amazing and she has the most beautiful expressions ever! She is so gracious and artistic. I can’t wait to see her grow into a senior gymnast! I think she is the most promising Dutch gymnast of all of them. <3

Beautiful gymnast, could watch gymnastics like this all day long. Sadly, really really hard to see her ever on floor as a senior, although I would gladly give up the tumbles for the dance….sadly, this will never be done .

Is her sister Annie Thorisdottir?! Crossfit world champion?!

She's not Anníe's sister, they're most likely not related. Eyþóra's last name is Þórsdóttir, Anníe's is Þórisdóttir. They're dads have different names :)
