In the second subdivision the overall level was much improved due to the occasional moments of brilliance from Russia, Canada and Belgium.
Elsabeth Black managed a perfect all around performance (with her usual/inherent execution errors) and is now sitting comfortably at the top of the all around rankings. She made a solid case for her qualification to the beam, floor and vault finals. At this point in time she is also in the top 8 for the uneven bars final but it is highly unlikely for her to remain in contention for a spot until the end of the qualifications.
This event final already seems packed: Elena Eremina managed to overtake her other brilliant bar workers team mates with a 15.1/6.3. She is also 2nd in the all around qualifications ranks. The Russians did well in almost all their “planned” events, with the exception of Melnikova who had a meltdown on floor with two falls, and a very tentative beam routine for which she was severely deducted. Se said in the mixed zone that her nagging foot injury prevented her from doing as well as she would have wanted to on floor. Iliankova hit an impressive bars sent and is currently 2nd in the bars qualifications, while Paseka survived vault with messy legs but no threats to her life and is leading the vault qualifications.
Shoutout to Brooklyn Moos who competed all around for Canada and was a treat to the eyes. She is also second in the floor rankings after two rotations with a wonderfully artistic performance and with very distinctive tumbling (Podkopayeva was landed well). Team mate Shallon Olsen threw a really good Cheng next to her DTY and the vault final is now certain. Also noteworthy was Nina Derwael’s bars performances that scored in the high 14s, topped only by the Russians.
