2017 Euros: Podium Training Routines

2017 Euros started yesterday with the MAG podium training and continued on Tuesday with the WAG podium training. So far, two events has cast a bit of a shadow over the competition: Sofia Busato’s ACL tear and Georgia Mae Fenton’s injury that kept her out of the podium training.  But Tuesday was relatively quiet, a day full of high quality gymnastics. It was a nice glimpse at the routines without the pressure of the scores (or the comparison of marks under the new code versus the ones of the previous quad). Here are some of the highlights and some of the nail-biters after the podium training:

Maria Paseka was added at the very last minute to the Russian team. After Rio, she had surgery and dedicated a lot of time and effort to recovery for her back. Fortunately it looks like the healing went much faster than expected and here she is, competing on vault. In Cluj. she surprised by throwing her full difficulty. She landed a low Amanar and the Cheng was spotted:

If Paseka fails to land any of the two vaults, Ellie Downie will be there to grab the event title. She was solid with DTY and layout Podkopayeva:

Larisa Iordache hit her beam routine and has re-added her triple full landing, becoming a favorite for a spot in the beam final:

Catalina Ponor also had a solid beam routine (but hers looked good already after the two world cup events she took part in earlier this year). Her floor podium training routine, and more precisely the 2 1/2 to front layout combo is already making me anxious:

Elena Eremina unveiled a DTY on vault, upping her overall difficulty and thus becoming one of the all around favorites. She was splendid on beam but it is way early to become excited about her routine, knowing the Russian “tradition” of training vs competition:

Tabea Alt, the winner of the all around in Stuttgart and London World Cups and a huge favorite for the all around gold medal in Cluj, looked very shaky in training. She had multiple falls on beam and messed up her vault landing after a promising routine:

Rebecca Downie is pursuing in Cluj her third uneven bars European title. If she competes the same way she did in podium training, she could win:

Eythora Thorsdottir was superb on floor:

Angelina Melnikova has the potential to win a medal in the all around in Cluj. Her biggest challenge will be to hit her difficult balance beam routine:

Nina Derwael should be one of the contenders in a very disputed uneven bars final:
