With three weeks left in the regular season, the push for the post season is in full swing.

From here, everything counts much more now than it did in the beginning of NCAA gymnastics season. Some teams will crumble under the pressure and some will flourish. The cracks are starting to show. This week, some teams were able to handle the mid season pressure and came out on top. Still, others melted under the heat, the fatigue of eight straight weeks of competition brought their weaknesses to light.

For Florida, being the three time reigning NCAA champions has made them the team to beat and has put a target on their backs. When LSU visited the Gator’s for their Friday night meet, they took advantage of the small cracks in the fortress of Florida and won at Florida for the first time in over two decades. Florida had falls from Bridget Sloan on beam for the second week in a row and from Alex McMurtry on bars. Sloan also had an uncharacteristic out of bounds on floor. While Florida was able to outscore LSU on bars by 0.05, LSU out scored Florida on vault and beam and ultimately won by .025, 197.900 to Florida’s 197.875.

Florida hit the high scores early in the season with a 198.175 at home against Alabama, but then faltered the next weekend away at Georgia with a season low. With two experienced performers falling on some of their strongest events, is this a cause for concern? This week, Alex McMurtry competed all-around for the first time in her collegiate career. The pressure of competing all-around could have contributed to her fall on bars.  However, with Sloan faltering under pressure, this allowed Kennedy Baker to step up to win the all-around for the second week in a row. Alicia Boren took second place behind her. Despite pressure, the Gators scored their second highest score of the season.

LSU on the other hand was solid and nearly unbreakable on every event. Ashleigh Gnat scored 9.95 on vault, beam and floor. Sarah Finnegan was recovering from illness only competed on bars and beam and she had top performances on both events. A big improvement since she was struggling on both events alternatively for the past few weeks. She put up a solid 9.9 on bars and a 9.925 on beam. Jessica Savona was back in the floor line-up for the second week in a row, and she scored a 9.875.  She also made an appearance back in the vault line-up, scoring a 9.8.

LSU’s road high bumped them three places in the standings to fourth place, bumping Michigan down to fifth. Michigan was able to make-up for last weekend’s blunder at Southern Utah. The Wolverines were back to their usual selves at their away meet against Oklahoma, they scored a 197.275, much more on par with their performance standard. Oklahoma scored their season high and became the second team to break 198 this season with a 198.075. The Sooners also scored a season high on floor of 49.700, matching LSU’s season high against Auburn. At this point, Oklahoma is making their push to the post season. This team has been focusing on the small details and taking their time to not rush anything.  Their efforts are paying off. The girls take their time to hit handstands on bars, proper blocking on vault and especially taking their time on beam. Ali aka “AJ” Jackson has stepped up to be one of the most solid and reliable performers for Oklahoma. On vault, she performed a beautiful Yurchenko one and a half to score a 9.975. On floor, she showed so much power, she needed to slow down her run into her tumbling passes to control her tumbles. Before her first tumbling pass, she holds up her hand and blows a puff of chalk dust, providing just a little bit of theatrics to her performance. She earned a 9.95. Oklahoma has not used all-around competitors for the last couple of years, but they broke that streak when they put up Chayse Capps and Keeley Kmieciak in the all-around this year. Both have been solid performers in the all-around. Capps is currently the top ranked all-arounder in the NCAA with an RQS of 39.6, ahead of Florida’s Kennedy Baker. Kmieciak is solidly ranked in the top ten as well at number seven with a 39.430 RQS.

Georgia came to legendary rival Alabama on their home turf on senior night for the Crimson tide. The Tide brought back senior Carley Sims in the line-ups for beam and floor, even though she hasn’t competed since the Tide’s first meet of the season at UCLA due to surgery. Sims had a bobble on beam, earning her only a 9.635. She came back for a solid floor performance, earning her a 9.8.  Lauren Beers had a huge night. She scored a 10.00 on vault, the first time in her collegiate career with a beautiful, stuck Yurchenko one and a half. She concluded her final senior meet with a beautiful floor routine, opening double layout pass to earn a 9.975. Alabama had a solid meet and their consistency earned them a season high 197.550 to boost them to the third place in the rankings.

Georgia on the other hand did not fair so well. Their struggles with beam have been well documented. The Gym-Dogs are ranked in the top ten on vault, bars and floor, but beam has been their worst and most inconsistent event this season, and are only ranked 32nd in a tie with Southern Utah.  The trouble started on bars, which ironically is Georgia’s best event.  Natalie Vaculik fell in the lead off spot earning only a 9.2. Georgia was able to drop that score, but they wound up counting a fall from Brittany Rogers, when she fell on her Ricna to Pak salto combination, earning only a 9.25. Georgia scored a season low of 48.5. However, despite their issues, senior Brandie Jay put up a stellar performance earning a 9.9, with huge difficulty, including a Shushunova and dismounting with a stuck full twisting double layout.  Georgia redeemed themselves on vault, earning a 49.325 and Brittany Rogers scored a 9.925 on her Yurchenko one and a half, earning her second place behind Lauren Beers.

While Georgia’s floor rotation was good, on their final rotation, their old enemy, the beam came back and reared it’s ugly head. Natalie Vaculik had her second fall of the night on her back handspring to layout step out series on beam, scoring a 9.2. Georgia hoped to drop that score, but Ashlyn Broussard fell on her series and only scored a 9.150, forcing them to count Vaculik’s 9.2, scoring only a 48.525 for their beam total, earning them a low of 195.675.

At Arkansas, Kentucky scored another season high of 196.700. They put up a score of 49 and above on vault, beam and floor. On beam, Kentucky scored a season high of 49.375. Sidney Dukes and Cori Rechenmacher both earned 9.9, putting them in a four-way tie for 2nd with Amanda Wellick and Samantha Nelson of Arkansas.  Alex Hyland took the beam title with a 9.925. Arkansas also scored a season high of 197.225, with highs on bars, beam and floor. Bars were the strongest event for Arkansas, earning them a 49.550, dropping a 9.85 from Keara Glover with 9.925’s from Erin Frier, Braie Speed and Paige Zasiski. Amanda Wellick earned a season high in the all-around with a 39.600.

At their home meet against Arizona State, UCLA utilized some freshmen in their line-ups, while resting senior performers, Peng Peng Lee, Angi Cipra and Danusia Francis. Sonya Meraz competed in the all-around for the second time this season, scoring a solid 9.85 on beam and a 9.8 on floor. Nicki Shapiro made her collegiate debut on bars, scoring a 9.725. She had a mishap on beam when she fell on her back-handspring layout step out series. She missed her foot and slipped, causing her to crotch the beam. Shapiro chose to make the best of the situation and smiled and saluted the judges. Despite her quick thinking, she only scored a 9.250. Katelyn Ohashi made her return to the beam line-up after fracturing her sternum after her beam mishap at Arizona earlier this season. She came back with an exclamation point, scoring a 9.9 and earning her the beam title. Stella Savvidou made her second appearance for the Bruins, making a career debut on beam. Savvidou last competed on bars for UCLA at their Feb. 1, scoring only an 8.750 after a fall. Her beam debut was much smoother, and she earned a 9.825.

While Utah may have beaten Cal on their home turf, Cal put up a good fight and in the end, scored a solid 196.750, putting them to the 12th spot in the rankings.  Zoe Draghi tied with Utah’s Maddy Stover for the beam title with a 9.9. Cal was solid, scoring a 49 and above on all four events. Cal had a strong vault rotation, putting up three vaults with a 10.00 start value from Arianna Robinson, Sylvie Seilnacht and Alicia Gallarzo.  Robinson showed a not often done vault, a front handspring, front pike off with huge power and amplitude in the air.

Utah ‘s performance was on par with what they have been doing all season, but they had errors that could be contributed to fatigue from a grueling road schedule (this is their second of three straight away meets) or perhaps the pressure from dealing with injuries, Kari Lee’s Achilles tear and Samantha Partyka has been dealing with lower leg pain that has put her in and out of the all-around. Partyka had a big balance check on beam, and scored a 9.775, not terrible, but if Utah was hoping to drop that score, they were disappointed when Breanna Hughes fell after under rotating her back-handspring layout step out series, scoring only a 9.2. On floor, Tiffani Lewis botched her first pass, her full twisting double back, under rotating and landing in such a deep squat, she nearly put her hands down. She saved it and pulled off a 9.6. Toni Ann Williams of Cal had an uncharacteristic out of bounds on her double pike last pass. Cal was able to drop her score because the rest of the line-up scored a 9.8 and above. Utah was bumped from their previous 5th place spot to 6th in the rankings.  Cal got a boost to 12th, with an RQS of 196.253 bumping Stanford to 16th in the line-ups.

At their home quad meet against Iowa, University of Illinois Chicago and Southeast Missouri, Denver posted another season high of 197.525, which was also the second highest score in the program history.  They scored an average of 49.381 on each event, counting the lowest score of 9.775 from Emily Barrett on vault after dropping a 9.675 from Katie Menhenick. They matched their season high on bars and put up two season highs on beam and floor with a 49.475 and 49.525 respectively. Nina McGee scored a season high on vault and beam with a 9.95 and a 9.9 respectively and matched her season high of 9.925 on bars and 10.00 on floor. In the all-around she scored a season high of 39.775. Julia Ross, a beautiful bars and beam worker put up her highest beam score of the season, a 9.925. Maggie Laughlin, who is an underrated floor performer, scored a season high of 9.925 on floor. This landed Denver in the 13th spot in the rankings, just behind Cal in the rankings separated by only .025.

After this coming weekend of competition, there is two more weeks until the close of the regular season. Regionals are just over a month away and the conference championships, the official close of the regular season, are three weeks away. Consistency is not merely an expectation; it is a requirement as the race to the post season is in full swing.

Monday, Stanford will be at Oregon State will leap during their leap day meet. On Friday, Florida will go back on the road to meet Kentucky at home. This will be a meet to watch. Florida is ranked higher in the rankings and could no doubt win at Kentucky. But, Kentucky has shown that they are able to take on the top ranked teams and hold their own. Florida definitely has big names on their team, Bridget Sloan, Kennedy Baker, while Kentucky does have a freshmen heavy team.  However, Kentucky’s freshmen are eager and ready to go, and are capable of holding their own against Florida. Alabama goes on the road to go to LSU and Utah will have their third straight road meet at Michigan. Oklahoma is at home for the second week in a row and will host Arizona, who recently beat Washington at home with a 196.100, 0.05 behind their season high of 196.150. Denver will host Minnesota and the Air Force Academy for their last home meet of the season, and then will go to Colorado Springs on Sunday for basically the exact same meet, just at the Air Force Academy instead of their home turf.  Georgia has their first of two meets this weekend, hosting Auburn Friday night before they travel to Los Angeles to battle Stanford ant UCLA. Cal will host a quad meet against Lindenwood, Michigan State and Southern Utah and Oregon State hosts a tri-meet with Ball State and Seattle Pacific.

Saturday, Washington hosts Western Michigan for their last home meet of the season and then will go to Seattle Pacific Monday, March 7 and Sunday, UCLA hosts a PAC 12 versus SEC tri-meet with Georgia and Stanford.
